Some years ago Tescos premium cat litter in the blue bag used to be the best one to use but I have a feeling that it has changed since then. There is no need to pay outrageous prices for special plant substrate. I dont know about using it as a substrate on its own but believe that your cost per pound would be higher for kitty litter than for other plant substrates designed specifically for planted tanks.

So kitty litter cannot do ANYTHING to the water in an aquarium. I would also worry about it altering the pH KH and GH of your aquarium because clay tends to have a native pH between 7 and 9 depending on source. Laterite can only absorb small amounts of water. Everything i put in it takes off like a rocket. My only then concern being that perhaps itll be to the detriment of the plants as they will have further to burrow plus how do they cope getting through a membrane.
